Thermo Fisher Supplies Analytical Instruments to World Anti-Doping Agency Laboratory in South Korea

Chromatography and mass spectrometry technologies designed to detect prohibited substances in elite athletes

WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire— Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, today announced that its High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry instrumentation has been used by Korea Institute of Science and Technology's Doping Control Center, a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory responsible for screening and identifying banned substances in athletes from around the globe during a major sport event in South Korea.

Based in Seoul, South Korea, the Doping Control Center conducted prohibited substance screening using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) workflows. Instruments included:

In addition, Unity Lab Services in South Korea provided on-site technical and application support. Over the course of six weeks, the Doping Control Center has run several thousand tests using Thermo Scientific instruments.

"The high-end technologies of Thermo Fisher, combined with their service expertise, have been vital in the prohibited substance screening process," said Dr. Oh-Seung Kwon, Lab Director of the Doping Control Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).

"We are excited to provide our innovative screening solutions, as well as on-site technical and application support, to the Doping Control Center during this important event," said Jakob Gudbrand, president, chromatography and mass spectrometry, Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Thermo Fisher provides laboratories with support in and out of competition testing with high-throughput instruments for screening large sets of compounds efficiently in a single methods approach. The company offers chromatography consumables and mass spectrometry–based solutions that demonstrate analytical specificity, sensitivity, and dynamic range in terms of concentration and number of drugs monitored for quantitative analysis.
